Tuesday last, the 17th December, was the latest day for depositing private Bills for the forthcoming Session of Parliament. The number of municipal bodies seeking powers to run motorbuses is in excess of last year, and includes :Keighley (Yorks.) Corporation ; Widnes (Lancs.) Corporation; Blackburn Corporation ; Ayr Corporation; Burnley Corporation ; and Merthyr Tydvil (Glam.) Corporation. The promoters of four private undertakings, viz. : The London and Windsor Motor Roads, Tramroads and Tramways • the Croydon and Southern Districts Tramways; the West London, Barnes and Richmond Tramways; and the Lanarkshire Tramways Company, have given the requisite notices in regard to bills having reference, inter alia, to motorbus services.

The Keighley Bill contains the following clause relating to motor omnibuses.

To empower the Corporation to provide and run motor omnibuses within the borough and beyond the borough along the following routes :—(a) From the borough boundary near Vv'hin's Wood, along the Keighley and Halifax main road to cross-roads ; (b) from the borough boundary at Utley, along the Keighley and Kendal main road, through Steeton to Eastburn ; (c) from the borough boundary at Stockbridge, along the Keighley and Bradford main road to Bingley ; (d) from the borough boundary near Exley Head, along the Toiler Lane, Haworth, and Bluebell Road to Ackworth; and in any other direction which may be necessary or expedient ; to empower the Corporation to demand and take fares, tolls and charges in respect thereof, to purchase and take on lease lands and buildings for and in connection with the purposes aforesaid, and to make by-laws for regulating the travelling in or upon any motor omnibuses.

The Widnes Corporation Bill contains the following clause.

To empower the Corporation to provide, maintain and run omnibuses worked by animal or mechanical power within the borough of Widnes and the townships of Ditton, Halewood, Cronton, Rainhill and Bold, in the rural district of Prescot, and the township of Cuerdley, in the rural district of Warrington, and in any other direction that may be deemed necessary or expedient and if thought fit the intended Act will prescribe the route along which omnibuses may be run, and to authorise the Corporation to demand and take fares, tolls and charges in respect of the conveyance of passengers, goods and parcels, to purchase and take or lease lands, houses and buildings for the purposes of the construction of motor and carriage houses and stables, and in connection with the purposes aforesaid, and to provide the requisite appliances for running motor omnibuses and to make by-laws for regulating the travelling in or upon such omnibuses, and to provide that the Corporation and any other authority having jurisdiction in any other area may enter into and carry into effect contracts and agreements with reference to the running of omnibuses into or through any such area.

The Blackburn Corporation Bill contains the following provision.

To empower the Corporation to provide and run omnibuses propelled either by animal or mechanical power within and beyond the borough and in any direction which may be necessary or expedient, and to authorise the Corporation to demand and take fares, tolls and charges in respect thereof, and to provide that the Corporation and any authority having jurisdiction in any other area may enter into and carry into effect contracts and agreements with reference to the running of omnibuses into or through any such area. To autlmrise the Corporation to purchase by agreement and to erect and hold lands and buildings, and purchase, provide, maintain and work such horses, plant and apparatus, appliances and conveniences as they may deem necessary or expedient in connection with the running, equipment and repair of omnibuses, and to em

ploy and pay all such servants, workmen and others as may be required in connection with the running, repair and equipment of omnibuses, and to make and repeal and re-make all such by-laws and regulations for regulating the travelling in or upon any such omnibuses and the conduct of persons using the same and of the servants and agents of the Corporation employed in connection with such omnibuses, and for appropriating all receipts and expenses derived from or incurred in connection with such omnibuses as part of the receipts and expenses of the tramway undertaking of the Corporation.

Burnley municipal authority seeks powers—

To authorise the Corporation to provide, maintain and run omnibuses and motorcars within the borough in connection with their tramways or any tramways over which the Corporation have running powers.

The Merthyr Tylvil Corporation Bill provides as follows.

To empower the Corporation to provide and run motor omnibuses within the borough, to demand and take fares, tolls and charges in respect thereof, to purchase and take on lease lands and buildings for and in connection with the purposes aforesaid, and to make by-laws fotoregulating the travelling in or upon any motor omnibuses.

The Corporation of Ayr will seek powers in the forthcoming Session of Parliament, under a provisional order-To authorise the Corporation to provide and run omnibuses in connection with the tramways or during the interruption of traffic thereon, and to demand and take fares, tolls and charges in respect thereof.

The Bill of the London and Windsor Motor Roads, Tram_ roads and Tramways Company contains the following clauses with regard to motor omnibuses.

To authorise the company to provide and work motorcars and orrinibuses for the conveyance of traffic of all descriptions, and to make charges in respect thereof.

The Croydon and Southern Districts Tramways Company Bill includes the following provision.

To authorise the company to provide run and work omnibuses or carriages or motorcars or any of them in connection with the intended tramways and to supply electric energy therefor and to levy and take such tolls, rates, fares or charges for the use of such omnibuses, carriages, motorcars or any of them as they may think reasonable or as shall be specified in the Bill, and to make by-laws for regulating and travelling in or upon such omnibuses, carriages or motorcars.

Lanarkshire Tramways Company will promote a Bill containing the following clause.

To authorise the company to provide, work, and use in connection with or in extension of their tramway system, omnibuses, coaches, cars and other road vehicles to be drawn or moved by animal power or electrical or any mechanical power, and therein to convey persons, luggage, parcels, merchandise and goods and to make and recover charges in respect of such conveyance and to enter into contracts or agreements with any company or person for the supply or working of such omnibuses, coaches, cars and other road vehicles.

The West London, Barnes and Richmond Tramways Company Bill includes the following clause. To authorise the company to provide, run and work omnibuses or carriages or motorcars or any of them in connection with the intended tramways, and to supply electric energy therefor, and to levy and take such tolls, rates, fares or charges for the use of such omnibuses, carriages, motorcars or any of them as they may think reasonable or as shall be specified in the Bill, and to make by-laws for regulating and travelling in or upon any such omnibuses, carriages or motorcars.
