Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Alexander of Ifield Field, Crawley, Sussex has been charged with stealing a truck worth £10,000, with the theft of an £83,500 Scania and with handling two stolen trucks.

The remaining five have been charged with offences in connection with the theft of trucks: four are fitters and one is a mechanic. They are: John Connerley of Gunwha le Close, London SE16; Ian Mackie of Carlton lull. Herne Bay, Kent; Paul Blackburn of Park Barn, Guildford, Surrey; Brian Kenney of London SE23; and Dennis Balfe of Surrey Quays, London SE8.

The maximum penalty for theft is seven years in prison; handling stolen goods gets two years maximum, although much depends on the value of the property and the discretion of the court, says the Home Office.

Two others arrested at the Deptford yard were not charged and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

The police say that surrounding firms are unconnected to any truck theft investigation.

The six men charged were brought before Camberwell Green Magistrates Court last Saturday (14 August) and remanded on bail to appear at Tower Bridge Magistrates Court on 27 August.

In a separate swoop a day before the London raid, said to be part of the same investigation. Nottinghamshire officers arrested four people but later released them without charge.
