A BATTERY ELECTRIC floor1scrubbing machine upon which the operator rides has been produced by Matling, Ltd., Wolverhampton.

Designated the Saturn IT, the machine has two tanks, one for carrying detergent and water, and the other sludge. Power for brush drive and an air extruder comes from an ExideIronclad 175 a.-h. battery. The traction motor drives through a three-speed gearbox.

The brushes inter-mesh. In crosssection, each brush is like a fourpointed star. The advantage is that no unscrubbed streak is left on the floor.

The brushes may be changed by raising the appliance by means of its built-in jacks. The water-detergent mixture is sprinkled immediately ahead of the rotating brushes. Dirty water is piled up by trailing squeeges attached to a rear suction bar, which withdraws it into the sludge tank. It is claimed that a floor dries within seconds of the machine's passing.
