Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THERE are certain tools in everyday us el by motor mechanics and engineers which can be put to several uses, but there can be few appliances which possess the all-round utility of the new draw-press just introduced by the Garage Equipment Co., Dolphin Works, Braintree, Essex. Moreover, its application to a variety of tasks is not made possible by the use of complicated parts, for the tool is simplicity itself.

A glance at the accompanying illustrations gives a good idea of the general construction of the tool and some of the uses to which it can be put. The press is solidly built and its pressure capacity is eight tons. The pressure screw is heat-treated and worksin a hardened steel nut 2 ins. long. A cap for the screw is provided and this can he quickly attached or removed. The forged hook arms, which are shown in

use in one of our pictures, are adjustable to the extreme limits of the press frame and are rigidly attached to the top beam by hardened wedges. The bottom beam can be adjusted in four positions at equidistant intervals along the main members of the press. The full vertical capacity of the press is 15 ins, and the distance between links in

the horizontal plane is 121 ins. It should be mentioned that an arbor plate, having four different-sized slots, forms part of the equipment of the press.

The first picture we reproduce shows the press in use as a vise, two hardened V blocks being provided. The V which runs the length of each block has a corrugated surface, to ensure that any shaft that is being dealt with is securely held. The other side of each block has a smooth-surface V to enable shafts to be straightened, etc. In the second picture the tool is shown converted into a horizontal press, this having been effected by the removal of a single pin. This position is best for certain jobs and enables the press to accommodate particularly long shafts.

How the press can be used for the removal of stubborn gears is exemplified in the third illustration. By loosening bolts and removing the bottom beam —a simple operation—the puller hook arms can be brought into use as shown.

Our pictures merely provide evidence of a few distinct uses for the press, but others will quickly suggest themselves. The fact that it can be quickly fixed to a bench and mad ei available in several forms is sufficient to indicate its claims for installation in the garage and repair shop. The press weighs 101 lb. and sells at ,f8 13s. 4d.
