Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE managing director of Anglo1. Scottish CarDeliveries, of Luton, Beds, Mr. S. Colby, said on Tuesday that the demand for. car carrier transport throughout the country was not steady. He was speaking before the Metropolitan Licensing Authority, who was considering an application by Mr.' Golby's firm for 10 B licences. Mr. Colby said there was fluctuation depending 'on the 'availability of shipping and added: "If there is a large number of ships that calls for many transporters.'

On some days there were not enough transporters available from any transporter company, added Mr. Colby. Disagreeing with this, Mr. William W. Richards, senior depot manager of Motor Vehicle Collections Ltd., of Luton, said that the demand for transporters depended on the availability of ships. Mr. Richards contended that demand depended on the shipping dates given by manufacturers and claimed that " ships lie in dock for seven to 10 days and in such circumstances transport firms are given perhaps seven days' notice ".

Mr. Richards agreed in cross-examination that five immediate prohibition notices and two delayed notices on his vehicles had resulted from Ministry of Transport investigations.

1 he sales director of Motor Vehicle Collections, Mr.. R. J. Spring, said that he had moved 450-550 vehicles a week northerly and 250-300 in a southerly direction. He said his firm was at present negotiating for three other ports to be available to accept .a type of train loading by rail which had been put forward. A representative of '11. -11. Henry Ltd., Oxford, said the work 'Was diminishing, especially from Nuffield ExPOrts.

Mr. David M. Barrow,'ofOxford, a traffic superintendent to. a car carrier company, Furness and Parker, said there were always vehicles available for Nuffield ExPorts carrying. • He understoodthat Anglo-Scottish Was limited to the carrying of Vauxhall. cars on a contract basis and said that the grant of new licences would. cause a glut in the market where there 'was already a very adequate fleet.

I he hearing continued on Wednesday.
