(IN MANY types of enclosed buses one of the most discomforting features from the passengisrs' point of view is the constant rattle of glass which occurs when the vehicle is travelling over any but the smoothest of surfaces. There are various methods employed in

'order to ninimize this disability, but, it is very difficult to effect a, complete cure, owing to the fact that a slight bending movement of the frame takes place when the vehicle is carrying its full quota of passengers, tending to bring the rigidly attaached dashboard out of the vertical and thereby stressing the whole front of the body to which it is, in the conventional type of design, usually attached. After a time this action results in a weakening of the framing, and, coils° quently, the glass becomes loosened, with the result that it is extremely difficult to deaden rattle, although, by the use of rubber channels, or similar means, the noise can often be reduced to a minimum.

This feature has received special consideration in the design of a saloon bus which has recently been delivered by Leyland Motors, Ltd., to the Cumberland Motor Services, Ltd. To prevent the possibility of rattle being set up, the dashboard of the vehicle, which we illustrate, is not shaped in the customary manner, but constitutes a plain rectangular sheet of metal, which is secured by the usual 'brackets to the frame. The front part Of the body is designed to surround this, but at the same time leaving a clearance of Iin. all round. The intervening space is shielded by a curved draught plate, as shown in the accompanying line illustration, which is bolted to the front cross-member of flat body,

This plate has been found, in practice, to be absolutely effective in excluding dust, rain and undue draughts, whilst by disco/meeting the body superstructure from the metal dashboard the possibility of rattle has been eliminated. . Incidentally, the illustration which we reproduce of the .bus also gives a good idea of the new Leyland radiator.
