Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Designed for Cheap Production and Low Sale Price.

The use of motor rollers has increased to a remarkable extent during the past few years, particularly on large estates, both for road-making and grass-rolling, and for the latter purpose on cricket grounds and golf courses, whilst their usefulness for road-patching, cross-roiling, and similar purposes, is now fully recognized by competent road authorities, and it is no longer unusual to see a small petroldriven road roller on main roads, as well as cross roads, working jointly 'with ponderous and much more costly steam rollers. Both classes of road-making machines have their particular uses, but, whereas the big steam roller can only be used for longitudinal rollinj. of roads, the petrol roller may be used for that purpose, as well as for cross-rolling.

One of the most interesting exhibits at the Horticultural

dni ing the International Road Congress Exhibition, of June last, was a three-axle roller, built to the designs of Col. Crompton, the Consulting Engineer to the Road 'Board, and it needs no effort of our

pen to put forward the advantars attending the use of such machines.

There are Witliy clubs and estates, however, wbose finances ale not in that healthy condition which would enable them to lay out so large an amount of ca.pitar as is entailed in the purchase of any of the types of motor rollers that have previously been mentioned in our pages, and, to such users, the description of th3 new roller which is given here

after, and the accompanying illustrations, should be of interest.

It is a small power machine, of extremely simple design., and one which may be produced at a very low price. Unfortunately, at present its inventor has not made arrangements for its manufacture on a commercial scale, as in his own experimental workshops, he can produce them only in limited numbers.

A representative of this journal, some weeks ago, paid a special visit to Beccles, in Suffolk, for the purpose of testing and examining one of these machines, and his report is such that we have no hesitation in recommending it to the :notice cf any manufacturer who is seeking a really sound line, and one that is sure to find a. reody market.

The roller under notice has been designed by Mr. Arthur S. F.
