HOPES ARE HIGH that a longrunning fight by a Yorkshire truckstop owner to relocate his site nearer to a new junction on the upgraded A1(M) is about to reach a conclusion.

Michael Exelby has spent £400,000 on a planning inquiry into his application to move Exelby Services in Londonderry two miles away after it lost half its business when the road was upgraded in 2010. But lengthy delays have scuppered his attempts.

However, it is understood that a decision following the inquiry could be made as soon as this week. “It’s appalling that the decision was due at the beginning of the year, then it was delayed by an extra inquiry, then it was June, then it was August and now we are in October,” Exelby said.

“It is frustrating that the government is standing up in the House of Commons talking about relaxing planning, promoting business, getting it moving and creating jobs and all I’m thinking is what a bunch of idiots.”
