THE decision of the Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee to increase tolls . for commercial vehicles is expected to bring renewed pressure for the introduction of contracts, particularly for C-licence holders using the tunnel several times a day,
The proposed new schedule, which needs approval from the Minister of Transport, would double existing charges for vehicles of 4 tons and over, increasing them to 5s., with an additional 5s. if a trailer is used.
The committee state'that the decision to increase tolls on heavy vehicles has been partly caused by greater wear and tear of the road surface.
