Better A59

PLANS to press the Government for a start to be made on the A59 improvement scheme from Bickerstaffe to Bretherton are being formulated by West Lancashire District Council. The council has asked for a meeting with the Department of the Environment in a bid to push the project through.

Dear Dery

COMPLAINTS that some diesel fuels are priced about 10p a gallon more than higher grade petrols were made at North West Area Council of the National Chamber of Trade. One member said that in Canada such fuels are only 43 cents as against 88 cents for higher grade petrol. He urged that consideration be given to raising the matter with the Department of Prices and Consumer Protection.

Armour plated

BONN officials have revealed that Britain stands a good chance of selling armoured vehicles based on the LandRover to the German Police. One of the largest German States has asked for a demonstration of the vehicle which is known as the Shoreland. It is built on a specially strengthened Land-Rover chassis and is adapted for military and police work by Short Brothers. The manufacturer claims that its armour plating can withstand shots from standard Nato 7.62mm machine guns. The Shoreland carries one of these guns mounted on a turret.

Package deal

THE SCHEME for the testing of packagings used for dangerous goods was in the last stages of consultation, and he hoped that approval of PIRA for this purpose would be given shortly, Mr John Horam, Under-Secretary for Transport, told the Commons.
