-)mall-capacity oil-engined lorry, the Diesel Conversion Co., 128, The Arches, Macfarlane Road, London, W.12, is specialising in the production of reconditioned 1930 Chevrolet English-built chassis, having Perkins Wolf 2.5-litre compression-ignition engines installed and selling at the moderate price of £345.
In addition to this work, the company also undertakes similar conversions of any secondhand vehicle, whilst it is also prepared to supply new any make, having a Perkins, Dorman, Beardmore or Gardner oil engine. It holds the agency for the first-named, for an area which includes at its extremities Shepherd's Bush, Watford, Staines and Hampton.
We recently inspected an interesting example of the Chevrolet conversion, the machine being destined for Mauritius, where, we are informed, it will be the first oil-engined goods vehicle to be brought into use. It has 13:38 a special body 8 ft. long, made possible by extending the main frame. Actually, it exceeds the legal overhang, but, being for export, this is of no consequence.
The Perkins engine is supported at three points, on rubber at the front and rigidly attached at the rear. An addition made to the frame is the provision of a strong channel-section cross-member, curved to pass below the bell-housing, in line with the rear hearers.
A 12-volt electrical system has been substituted for the original 6-volt set, two 6-volt 320-am p.-hour batteries being connected in series and mounted neatly on the running board under the
front of the body. Another minor alteration is the incorporation' of a 100-lb. per sq. in. oil gauge.
The reconditioning of these Chevrolets, we understand, includes the stripping down of the chassis and the renewal of every worn part. The vehicle we cursorily inspected appeared to represent sound workmanship.
