DAILY NEWSPAPERS FOR PARIS BY AIR. •

Messrs. Wrightson and Pearse have made a four-months charter contract to carry newspapers daily from London to Paris for Wm. Dawson and. Sons, Ltd. The first flight was made on May 14 and the morning. departure from Heston is at 4.30 a.m.; the machine arrives at Le Bourget at 6.30 am.and the newspapers (mainly British national daily papers) are on sale in Paris at 7.15 a.m. A Dragon is being used.

Wm. Dawson and Sons, Ltd., is of world-wide importance in the newspaper distributing business: It has a subsidiary company in Paris, another in South Africa and two in Canada, also agents all over the rest of the world. Until now the company has never been able to obtain a sufficiently low rate, conversant with a high standard of reliability, for the conveyance of papers to the Contittent.

The present charter is for four months, and developments are in view, especially with regard to airports on the Empire routes. This is an entirely British venture.

The company's new Dragon, which is intended to work the Heston-Ryde-Shanklin route (and is expected to do so with a high degree of economy), is likely to be on the service for Whitsun.

Orkney Mail Contract Granted.

The air service which, since May 7, 1933, Highland Airways, Ltd., has operated between Inverness and the Orkney Isles, is to carry the Royal Mail. Negotiations with the Postmaster-General and other authorities have been proceeding for a long time and the granting of this mail contract marks an important step, not only in

the 'development of communications in Scotland, but also in the progress of British internal air services. .

Mr. James MacCaltum, managing director of the North of Scotland, Orkney and Shetland Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., has joined the board of directors of Highland Airways, Lid.

The company's Aberdeen—Kirkwall service comtnences on May 8, with one departure in each direction daily.

Bristol-Bournemouth Air Line Starts.

Full operation commenced yesterday, the service connecting at Bournemouth with a western extension of the services of P.S.I.O.W.A,, Ltd.

The railway companies have assisted the Norman Edgar concern in every possible way and have agreed to Thos. Cook and Son, Ltd., effecting bookings. It will be remembered that the railways placed a ban on bookings by the principal agents for air-line operators in this country who were not members of the International Air Traffic Association. • Provincial Airways News.

Provincial Airways, Ltd., reports that in the week to May 13, its aircraft flew 5,170 miles. This covers the LondonPlymouth schedule service, also a chatter flight to Blackpool.

HILLMAN'S DAY TRIPS TO PARIS FOR £4 5s.

• fare of. £4 53. return, which, -he. says, will lie satisfactory so long as he experiences good traffic demands. The

week-end ticket costs £4 15s. •

The other advantage of the new serservices is that both of the daily services from Belfast and both of those from Glasgow will, from May 17, enable the traveller to reach Paris the same evening—even after lunching in Belfast or Glasgow this will be possible and with no element of hurry whatever.

Isle of Man Conference Traffic.

Whitsun Holidays on the Continent.

A feature of this year's Whitsun week-end, so far as air travel is con, cerned, is the development of excursion facilities to Continental resorts. British Air Navigation Co., Ltd., Messrs. Wrightson and Pearse, and Imperial Airways, Ltd., are all running inexpensive day trips to Le Touquet. The Hillman Paris service is given above.

The big Continental air-line companies offer interesting suggestions. Ostend and Le Zoutc are reached in little over an hour, and even distant towns are within easy access of London. Berlin is reached in 4f hours, Switzerland• in 5i hours.
