ABOUT 70 persons were present at a meeting of hauliers held under the auspices of the South London Committee of the Road Haulage Association, when Mr. A. E. Drain, chairman of the committee, occupied the chair.
Mr. Hay Bittel, senior vice-chairman of the Metropolitan Area, referred to the varied views of the Traffic Commissioners of different areas, and recommended hauliers to attend public sittings in order to familiarize themselves aith the procedure. He also stressed the need for paying fair wages. Mr. F. F. Fowler, of the national council of the R.H.A., stated that the record sheets required under the Road and Rail Traffic Act had been completed, but had not yet been issued. t.These are outlined elsewhere in this issue.) He said that, under a flat rate similar to that agreed between the Woolworth organization and the railway companies, a consignment of potatoes worth £100 could be carried from Lincolnshire to Reading at 2s. a ton, whereas a private trader would have to pay £1 a ton.
