Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I'M WRITING in response to the disgracefully lenient penalty levied on an Italian truck driver following a crash on the M11.

The driver had failed to take both weekly and daily rests and yet was fined only £200. It would appear that the English motorist is subsidising the foreign motorist as our fines are astronomical in proportion (£60.00 for a minor speeding offence). The driver should have received a much harsher punishment, at least a £2,000 fine, banned from our roads for at least a year and received points on his licence.A fine should have been levied on the owner of the lorry and the vehicle impounded. If the driver did not pay his fine he should have been jailed. I have spoken to a few UK lorry drivers and they are amazed at how light the punishment was. They feel had the driver been British he would have received points on his licence and a higher fine. It is common knowledge (at street level) that foreign drivers are given lighter sentences than our own.

I have written to my MP and he has promised to investigate, particularly if we can provide concrete evidence that UK drivers are being hit harder than their foreign counterparts. If drivers have this evidence then please come forward and we can try to get this injustice stopped. Steve Bradley Via e-mail
