ROAD transport is the future: railways are the oast. And, to emphasize this contention, Mr. R. N. Ingram, national chairman of the Road Haulage Association, speaking at the annual dinner of the Association's Yorkshire Area, this week, declared: "We must exchange the permanent way' of life for the 'motor way' of life.

"The individual wants his own car and means to get it. In the same way, a trader or manufacturer, who is our customer. wants to send his goods by road because of the many advantages that this gives him. He will evidently go on sending his goods by road whatever decision Parliament comes to," The theory that because we had railways we must be forced to use them was absurd, Mr. Ingram continued. The present Government's policy quite rightly rejected this premise, "but they may be moving towards something perilously close to it simply because of their plan for pouring millions of pounds into the bottomless pit of the Commission.
