Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN application by C. G. Littlewood, Spital Hill, Sheffield. to operate day coach excursions to London via the M1 was refused by the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners on Monday. At an inquiry in Leeds last week, Mr. C. G. Littlewood, managing director, said that he had been asked by people who had used his excursion along M1 to London Airport to run day excursions to London by the same route.

British Railways, who objected, said that if coach proprietors had permission to run on the motorways, they would abstract traffic from the railways by running fast excursions when the Sheffield-Leeds motorway came into existence.

It was stated at the inquiry that the railway service between Sheffield and London had been cut by 16 trains a week, and that there were now few London services from Sheffield Victoria Station.

Mr. Littlewood did not complain about railway facilities, but considered that people should have the opportunity to choose between road and rail.
