THE RECENT STRIKE by Tube workers in London, which brought parts of the underground system to a standstill for two days, resulted in long delays for some delivery drivers.

Rob Auchterlonie, a driver at Croydon-based Hydro Cleansing says congestion was "horrendous' as members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RNIT) union held a 48-hour strike from June 9-11 over job cuts, pay and working conditions, which meant more commuters had to use cars and buses to get to work He adds: "Croydon to Tottenham, which is 16.3 miles, took about three hours, as opposed to the usual one hour on my 7am journey. It was horrendous. The

only way to deal with it was to try to allow extra time and leave earlier to get to the j obs.

Kay Johnson, account manager at Cricket Logistics, a subsidiary of Gullivers Travel, which has been managing transport for the ICC World Twenty20 cricket tournament, tells CM: "Our Luton van collecting the baggage of the South African squad was more than an hour late.

"Thanks to the strike, it took our driver two and a half hours to get from North London to Kensington. We did not lose money because the team were understanding that this was out of our control, but they were certainly not pleased."

However, Stuart Godman, sales and marketing director at City Link, says: "We invested more money ahead of the strikes to ensure our service levels were not affected.

-We had less than a 1% dip in our premium service, and the nextday delivery was unaffected."

A spokesman for TNT adds: "The volumes on the roads were higher, but it was business as usual. We knew it was coming, planned ahead, and met our delivery targets':
