PC Howard sees volumes hit new heights

HAULIER PC HOWARD has seen the volumes it carries for a medical supplier more than double as the UK responds to the swine flu pandemic.

In the same week that the number of confirmed UK swine flu cases passed the 900 mark, but before the first death from the disease in the UK was announced, PC Howard said that in the first week of May, volumes carried for Bioguard Hygiene Solutions which manufactures surface wiping systems and hand gels to the health sector rose 155% and had remained static into June.

Bruce Macmillan, business development manager at PC Howard's Brixworth, Northampton base, tells CM the warehouse is now at 90% capacity, compared to a 40% average,

The growth follows Bioguard experiencing a surge in demand. Managing director Stuart Hay says: "Hospitals and healthcare customers across this country and [mainland] Europe were suddenly putting in orders for extra products as they dealt with fears over the spread of infection."

He claims the company had three months of orders in a fortnight.

The flexibility we offer via Palletways makes it possible for Bioguard to respond to an increase in orders, so it is good for their business," Macmillan says. The haulier has employed a new driver, with a further driver expected for the duration of the contract.

Total volumes across the business also rose in May by 20% on May 2008.
