£22.50 a week over the sixmonth period.

For a refrigerated trailer, the charge would be £50 a week plus a nominal charge for the operation of the refrigeration unit. These are only two examples of what the company can offer for hire.

Mr Ted Goddard, the proprietor of that company and Acme Trailer Sales Ltd, its associated company, told me that on the eight-acre site in Bermondsey he had more than 350 trailers of various kinds available including some recently acquired specially built trailers for carrying prefabricated concrete sections.

No mileage charges

Another company, which advertises its services as including no mileage charges or other extras, is Articulated Trailer Hire Ltd, Stockport. It offers skeletals, flats, platform skeletals (PSK) vans, curtain sides, tilts, tipping skeletals, refrigerated trailers and low loaders, all with alternative wheel arrangements.

The weekly charges for skeletals runs from £20.50 for a 23ft unit to £27 for a 40ft type. These charges reduce to £16.25 and £23 respectively if the hire period is for one year.

TIP is one of the larger organisations offering trailers for hire and as well as the usual variety of trailers, this company has Kangaroo tilts for Continental railway piggyback operation. It is also willing to hire trailers for Middle East work.

Here again, charges vary according to type of trailer, number of vehicles required and length of hire. Typical charges are quoted as £33 and £21 a week for up to one year for a 40ft platform skeletal. For a 12-metre tilt the range is from £49 to £34 and for a 12metre reefer from £160 to £100.

Transport charter, the York Trailer renting organisation, has a scale of charges which hear comparison with most others. For a Freightmaster 40ft tandem-axle trailer, the weekly rate is £52 reducing to £39 for a 26-week hire, for example. This organisation claims that it prefers to remain anonymous and does not splash its name all over the vehicle. In fact, it does not mind if the customer attaches his own name to the vehicles provided this sticker can be removed and the vehicle remain unmarked when returned.

Limited variety

A number of international companies have begun trading in the United Kingdom over the past few years, usually specialising in trailer hire for international container transport. These tend to have a limited variety of trailers mostly of the skeletal type.

Xtra is one of these. In the United Kingdom, the organisation is Xtra UK Leasing IAdleasing in the United States is synonymous with rental here. Although the company offers 12-metre tilts it has only 24ft and 40ft skeletals and 40ft PSKs as well.

Typical weekly charges are from £5.75 for a tilt to £3.85 for a PSK reducing to £4.55 and E3 over a 12-month hire period. A free mileage allowance of 150 miles a day or 1,050 miles a week is allowed and there is a Master Lease Agreement scheme.

This agreement puts the operator under no obligation. However, after completion of the agreement there is no further paperwork involved when further equipment is required in the future. All the operator has to do after that is make a telephone call and book what he requires. Advance payment is requested by this company which insists on bankers' references backed up by three other referees. For the past 18 months Flexivan International Ltd has been operating from Dunstable and by the end of next month will have a fleet of about 600 vehicles comprising tilts, frameless van trailers and PSKs.

Long-term hire

Another international company, ICS Trailer Ltd, London, has 12-metre tilts and skeletals for hire. Charges are on a par with other organisations at weekly charges of £42 for a tilt, £19 for a 20ft skeletal and £24 for a 40ft skeletal. These become £32, £14 and £17 respectively for 12 months' hire.

Trailer Finance and Hire Ltd, London, specialises in long-term hire principally of Kangaroo trailers for railway piggyback operation. For this purpose it owns some 100 tilt trailers and some grp boxes. Over 50 per cent of this company's business is done with overseas companies, particularly Italian. To hire a Kangaroo trailer for 12 months works out at £40 a week.

For other than Kangaroo work it has a small fleet of 12-metre tilts, Supertrailers and boxvans but these are not available for short-term hire.

Kangaroo operation might have some attraction to British operators in that no quota permit is required—in fact an extra quota permit can be claimed for each Kangaroo journey undertaken—and this is one way in which the weekend ban on the movement of freight vehicles can be overcome.

Inevitably, all companies expect the hirer to insure the vehicles, although many have their "own scheme which the hirer can take advantage of.
