Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

for o-m-o single-deckers

• A report on the design of one-man-operated single-deck buses, prepared by the London Transport Passengers Committee following complaints concerning these buses, has been sent to the London Transport Executive and the Department of the Environment.

The main design improvements supported by the committee are as follows: 1. An extra stanchion or hand-rail in the vicinity of the internal step (from standing area to seating area). The Committee has suggested that this might consist of a waist-high floor-mounted stanchion supporting a short horizontal handrail projecting from the screen at the front of the seating area and into the standing area of the bus.

2. One unrestricted entry for passengers with children and heavy luggage.

3. Practical examination of the suggestion that the 9fin. step into the rear seating area might be converted into two smaller steps and the sloping floor between the rear seats might be levelled. This would make it easier for elderly and disabled people to move in the rear of the bus.

4. Mirrors to be arranged above the exit so that the driver can see if it is safe to close the doors.
