Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I wonder if recent issues of CM may have confused your readers regarding the EEC drivers' hours regulations proposed to come into force in the UK on January 1 neat In your issue of May 30, my Director-General, in an article on passenger road transport and the EEC, said "These regulations do not affect regular (and this includes contract) services with a route Length of less than 50 km." Then on June 20, your Questions and Answers column featured a question doubting this statement and you replied : "The restriction of the exemption to regular services with a less than 50 km route length. . was later amended to remove the distance restriction." On July 4 in another Answer, you said you had "assumed " that 'the. earlier question referred to tachographs !

It is true that tachographs are not required on buses and coaches operating only on regular services regardless of the route length. However, the real issue is not the form of regulation but the hours of work and rest specified in Regulation 543/69 and here the facts are as Stated by my Director-General. Only drivers on regular services with a route length of 50 km or less are exempted from the EEC regulation.
