Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The first Scania LB80 for a British operator arrived in Britain at the beginning of this week, It was a 30-ton gross tractive unit for D. M. Smith (Strathaven) Ltd., Lanarkshire, and its ariival marks the start of sales of the new model to UK operators.

This new model was introduced earlier this year 1CM March 28) and Scania-Vabis (Gt. Britain) Ltd. reports that orders and inquiries so far received suggest that demand will match that for the heavier 110.

Four versions of the LB80 will be offered here, 10ft wheelbase 28and 30-ton-gross tractive units and two 16-ton-gross rigids, a 12ft 5.625in. wheelbase tipper and a 16ft 4.875in. haulage chassis; the Scania 110 tractive unit is designed for 32 tons gross and above.

The 30-ton tractor—the LB801-IS31 has the Scania DS8 turbocharged diesel with an output of 204 bhp gross at 2,400 rpm while the LB80H31 28-ton tractor and the two 16-ton-gross machines—LB80H38 tipper and the LB80H50 haulage chassis—have the naturally aspirated D8 which gives 165 bhp gross at the same governed speed.

The standard gearbox in the tractive units is a 10-speed splitter gearbox with a bottom ratio of 9,74 to 1 with the basic five-speed synchromesh unit 17.18 to 1 bottom) the option. The five-speed is standard in the 16ton-gross models with the 10-speed option. The single-reduction spiral-bevel rear axle is offered with ratios of 4.38, 4.86 or 5.67 to 1 and power steering is standard.

Braking on the LB80 is by a dual-circuit air-pressure system—separate circuits to the front and rear axles—and there are spring brakes at both axles to meet secondary and parking brake requirements. Brake drum diameters are 16,25in. all round with 3.5in. shoes at the front axle and 7in. at the rear.

The standard tilt cab on the model is similar in appearance to that on the 110 and there is the same high standard of interior trim and fittings.
