THEquestion of rates was a pertinent factor in the hire of low-loaders, Mr. Pritchard Jones told the North Western Deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. J. R. Lindsay, last week. He submitted that a local low-loader operator was entitled to preference over others when his customers wanted to go farther afield.
Mr. Jones was appearing for Blake and Arnold, Ltd., who applied at Ckiernarvon for an extension of their B-licence conditions. They wanted to add " indivisible loads originating in Caernarvon and Anglesey for direct delivery to sites in Merioneth and Denbigh." There we;.e objections by N. Edwards and Co., Mold, and W. L. Roebuck, Ltd., Heswall.
Mr. G. F. Jones, a Caernarvon contractor, said it would cost more to get the objectors' vehicles from Mold and Heswall to Caernarvon than the actual journeys with his plant. Blake and Arnold were restricted to Caernarvon and Anglesey, so road rollers had been sent up to 40 miles under their own power.
On behalf of the North Wales Gas Board, Mr. S. Nelson said some of their sites were in Merioneth and Denbigh. Edwards had been employed for this work, but there had been bad timekeeping and he did not like the loading methods used on a Cleveland excavator.
Mr. J. Edward .Jones, for the objectors, said Edwards had received no complaint about their methods. Their vehicle was not fully employed, nor wasthe Roebuck fleet of six low-loaders and one semi tow-loader.
The evidence showed there was an adequate supply of this type of transport.
Refusing the application, Mr. Lindsay said he had heard seven customer witnesses, none of whom had had any difficulty in obtaining this type of transport.
