JAPAN will continue to limit exports of light commercial

vehicles to the EEC, although the voluntary restrictions introduced three years ago were due to he lifted on 1.1nuary

The latest figures available in Brussels show that last year overall Japanese light coin mercial vehicle sales in the EEC were little changed — although there were shifts on national markets.

In Britain, Japanese sales slumped by almost 20 per cent to 17,603 vehicles during the first eight months of the year.

fheir market share fell over this period to about 12.4 per cent — well below the 15 to 18 per cent level which has been fixed in a "gentlemen's

agreementwith the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

But the Japanese made up some of their British losses by increasing French saLs by more than 62 per cent to 7,791 and selling another 15 per cent in Denmark to reach 10,395 vehicles.

• Japan is trying to open the way up for more British exports to break into its home market.

British commercial vehicle manufacturers are very wel

come to try to enter the Japanese market, the president of the Japan Centre for International Exchange, Tadashi Yamamoto, said this week.
