Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A PRESSURERESPONSIVE rA governor, the action of which is controlled from the distributor, has been introduced by the Holley Carburettor Co., Van Dyke, Michigan, U.S.A. The distributor incorporates automatic advance and retard mechanism and a centrifugal device linked by an airline to a sandwich-type governor mounted between the inlet manifold and the carburetter.

The centrifugal device has an air port, the opening and closing of which depend upon the position taken up by a weight restrained in the open-port position by a spring.

Connected to the air passage in which the port is formed is a component in which there is a butterfly valve, the movement of which responds to the pressure difference obtaining in a chamber bridged by a diaphragm. The airline terminates in a throttle-plate barrel and hence the pressure difference in the pipeline must vary with the conditions existing in the inlet manifold.

With the engine ticking over, the weight controlling the port will be unaffected and the port will remain open, thus breaking down the suction effect on the diaphragm. Under these conditions, a spring, linked to the diaphragm rod, will bias the throttle plate into the open position.

When the engine is speeded up, the governor weight in the distributor will tend to fly outwards and so gradually cover the inlet port. The effect of this will be to increase the drop in pressure above the diaphragm, which will rise

and force the throttle plate towards the closed position.

At any predetermined governed speed any attempt to increase the r.p.m. is ineffective because of the restriction 'formed by the governor throttle plate.

It is understood that these Holley components have been fitted lo American Dodge vehicles.
