Repairs to a Steering' Sector.

11705] " J.II." (Leyland) writes :β€”" The present difficult situation with regard to the procuring of spare parts has provided mechanics in many instances with an urgent need for devising makeshifts.

"Such an occasion recently occurred in connection with a wagon for which I am responsible. The steering sector of this machine, together with its shaft, was a solid forging. The steering arm was attached to a parallel portion of the shaft by one key. In course of time this key enlarged its keyway and rendered some repair necessary. To fit another and larger key would have weakened the shaft to too great an extent. It was necessary, therefore, to devise other means of effecting a repair. I cut cff the shaft, put the steering sector in the lathe and bored its centre out to a diameter of / in. larger than that of the old shaft. Three radial slots were cut. in one end of the hollow cylinder thus formed, the position of which will be apparent by reference to the enclosed sketch. [We have had this redrawn.β€”En.] From an old back axle I cut off a length of bar and turned it down so as to form a new shaft for the sector. A collar was left on this shaft in such a position that when suitably slotted the projections left on it would fit the slots in the sector. The end of the shaft for the reception of the steering arm was this time made taper in form so that no difficulty vas experienced in fastening the steering lever on to it and in keeninw it tight. As a further means bf securing the sector to its shaft I shrunk a collar over the slotted end."

Repairs to Magneto Coupling.

1.1706] "J.Ti." (Leyland) writes :β€”" A well-known type of magneto coupling is that in which the tongue of one harthe coupling engages wit a correspond

β€’ mg groove in the other half. After a time, when wear has commenced, this type becomes very noisy. In a particular chassis in my charge, this occurred, and to remedy it I so altered the existing coupling that I was able to convert it to a more modern type in which a leather disc serves to transmit the drive.

"I first of all removed the two portions of the coupling from the shafts and softened them. I then sawed off the jaws, and after mounting the coupling on a suitable mandril, faced the end and turned the outside circumference of the body of the coupling truly central with the bore. I then made two discs, 3 in. diameter, Ai. in. thick, and cut a recess in each of such a diameter that it registered exactly with the turned exterior of the existing coupling, as altered. These discs were secured, one to each half of the old coupling by means of four./ in. studs riveted over when in position. Six 1.91in. holes were drilled in each disc, near the outer circumferences, and a piece of leather, marked off for four holes bad bolted to the discs by two bolts in each, transmits the drive. "Besides being a better coupling when finished, this method of repair is cheaper than making new parts, as there is not the difficulty of boring taper holes to fit existing shafts." Removal of the magneto now takes longer, but there. is no noise from the drive, and no part liable to wear.
