Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Clydesdales, with the Addition of the 45 Cwt. Model Described Below, Now Form a Complete Range for Loads of from 15 Cwt. to 5 Tons.

R. Martens and Co., Ltd., Clydesdale House, 15a, Wilton Street, Grosvenor .19ace, S.W., .has recently added to the range of Clydesdales an additional model for a gross load of 2i tons. It is described as Yodel L 45, and although built of similar components to the heavier Clydesdales, which we described in our issue of the 24th August last, presents one or two points of difference to which no doubt our readers will like to have their attention drawn.

The Components.

The Continental engine is three-point suspended on the main frame and carries bolted to its rear end the Brown-Lipe gearbox. The latter company's multiple dry plate clutch with alternate plates of Baybestos and metal is included.. The long propelle' shaft from gearbox to Timken worm-driven rear axle is fitted with Spicer joints. Both brakes take effect on drums in the rear wheels. The radiator, as in the case of the other Clydesdales, is of British design, being built up with an internal tubular member and cast top and bottom headers.

Points of Difference.

It will be remembered that in the other Clydesdales the gearbox was centrally placed in the chassis, • a short clutch serving to convey the power from engine to box. The present model, therefore,. indicates a departure from previous practice in this regard, The torque and thrust reactions, in the case of ilie new model, moreover, are taken by the top leaves of the rear springs, and not by means of special members as previously.

Specification.

Dealing with the specification in detail, the engine is of 25 h.p., having four cylinders of bore 3i ins, and stroke 5 ins. Interchangeable valves are fitted, enclosed and water-jacketed ; they are situated along one side of the engine, exhaust and inlet being operated by the same camshaft. A three-hearing crankshaft is fitted and the timing gears have helically-cut teeth. A Zenith carburetter serves to provide the mixture, and a high-tension magneto supplies current for ignition.

Lubrication.

The lubrication system of the engine is by a force pump which draws oil from the base chamber and distributes it to pockets over the main bearings; thence it overflows to shallow troughs into --hich the connecting rods dip. Sight feeds are provided so that the driver may assure himself that the oil level is correct, The gearbox and axle case also utilize oil, not grease, and should be replenished every 200 miles or so. The special feature, which we have pre viously noticed on Clydesdales, of supplying the shackle pins and similar points with grease by means of a special greae gun, is to be noted also in the new model.

Steering Rad Chain-speed Gears.

The steering gear is on the right-hand side, being the usual worm and sector ; the change-speed lever and hand brake levers are central, in the case of this model. The gearbox provides four speeds forward and a reverse.

The Rear Axle.

A feature of the Timken axle, it must be remem ered, is its accessibility ; the drive shafts are removed with the axle caps, and it is then possible to Jilt out the cage containing the differential, after removing the top portion of the rear axle case: Tires, Dimensions, Equipmc n6 and price.

Single 900 mm. by 100 mm. solid band tires are carried by the front wheels ; twins of the same size by the rear. The wheelbase of the standard model is 12 ft. 2 ins., the track is'6 ft. 1 in., and the distance from the dashboard to the end of the frame for the accommodation of driver's seat and bodywork is 14 ft. 9 ins. The equipment includes two side lamps and brackets, one tail lamp and bracket, mechanical horn, jack, and oilcan, and a tool kit., and complete with tires the price is 2550 in London
