FORD has increased its lead over Leyland in new commercial vehicle registrations from less than 100, in January 1976, to 903 last month according to figures out last week.

Figures issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show Ford had 4,359 new registrations last. month against Leyland's 3,456.

Leyland's new registrations of commercial vehicles dropped from 4,672 in January 1976 by 1,216. Ford had a loss of 397.

Bedford was third in the registrations race last month with 2,157 new vehicles on the road, and they showed a gain of 87 over the January 1976 figure.

Top importer last month was 'Volkswagen who registered 456 new vehicles against 438 in January 1976. Chrysler France sold 288 new vehicles, a drop of 122 over the previous January, followed closely by Datsun and Honda with their new baby vans.

Total imported vehicles was 1,996 compared with 1,759 in January 1976.

Total number of new commercials registered in January stood at 12,328 compared with 13,784 in January 1976.

Ford is also still the overall leader in the commercial vehicle production race, but most manufacturers' production figures for December were down on the same period last year.

Average weekly production figures issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that only Foden made a significant gain, pushing the weekly average from 19 vehicles to 35.

Ford figures fell from 2,462 vehicles a week in December 1975 to 2,329 last December but the figure for production over the year rose from 2,483 in 1975 to 2,672 last year.

Total average weekly figures dropped from 6,987 in December 1975 to 6,337 last December, while total of recorded production dropped from 34,939 to 31,685.
