Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE SCOTTISH government last week announced its long-term investment programme for transport over the next 20 years.

Highlights of the Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR) include a replacement Forth Crossing at a cost estimated to be between E1.72bn and E2.34bn.

Road projects include the duelling of the A9 between Perth and Inverness, as well as the A82 and the roads around the port of Stranraer the A75, A76 and A77.

The plans for the Stranraer upgrades have been particularly welcomed by Northern Ireland's first minister Peter Robinson, who says the improvements would benefit Scottish and Irish hauliers involved in trade between the two countries.

Scottish transport minister Stewart Stevenson says the single largest scheme, the Forth Crossing, will be the "biggest transport infrastructure project in Scotland for a generation".

Gavin Scott, Freight Transport Association head of policy for Scotland, says: "This review is good news for freight. However, so far we have not been given a definitive date for any of the intended projects." Phil Flanders, Road Haulage Association director for Scotland and Northern Ireland, adds: "Further detail is required about when this project will be taken forward, but it is certainly a move in the right direction."
