• Brittany Ferries has added its name to the lengthening list of protesters intent on stopping international haulage of livestock.

After a meeting with the RSPCA. the ferry company banned from 22 August all animals going abroad for slaughter. It has also excluded from 30 September most animals carried abroad for further fattening or breeding.

From the end of September, livestock hauliers will only be allowed on Brittany Ferries if they are carrying animals for further fattening or breeding to French regions Brittany, Normandy and the Loire Valley.

The company says it will he working with the RSPCA and UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food to ensure enforcement of its rules.

In addition, any haulier not complying with a Code of Practice—due to be in effect by 30 September will he refused boarding.

Brittany Ferries also says that it is "envisaged that it will refuse to work" with livestock hauliers without BS 5750 or an international equivalent.

P&O European Ferries is threatening to ban live animals from its ferries unless the European Union puts in place enforceable legislation to improve conditions.
