Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Designed for open-type skips, a compactor—the Black Nodderhas been introduced by Presses Balers and Crushers, it is made in three sizes and is suitable for use with existing skips of up to 20 cu yd capacity. Features include a fabricated steel base, on which the skip is supported, and an hydraulically actuated platen hinged on a heavy-section specially-shaped beam at a point to the rear of the skip. Limits of movement of the platen are between positions approximately 1ft from the base of the skip and a vertical position clear of the skip when fully retracted, which provides a facility for replacement of skip working by orthodox methods using a vehicle with pick-up arms.

A major advantage that is claimed for the equipment is that while it is priced competitively with smaller compactor installations it can handle the large and bulky refuse which normally requires the use of a bigger, high-cost compactor installation.

Dependent upon the type of refuse compaction, ratios of up to 6 to 1 can be obtained. A ratio of 3 or 4 to 1 is considered realistic for average mixed refuse. The compactor can deal with general municipal refuse, 40 gal oil drums, tea chests, old furniture, light metal structures, old refrigerators, fibreglass tanks and mouldings, large cartons and long cardboard carpet cores, together with course ferrous ant non-ferrous swarf and so on.
