Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Licences for an IpswichColchester Service Declined AT the recent Sudbury sitting of the Eaetern Area Traffic Commissioners, the Eastern National Omnibus Co.; Ltd., applied for licences in respect of two new bus services, -both of which would affect the Ipswich area. In ihe first place the company applied in respect of the route between Ipswich and Colchester and it was stated in support of the application that the company proposed to work in conjunction with the Eastern Counties Road Car Co., Ltd. The latter concern ran between Ipswich and Mistley, and if tile licence were granted, through-travel facilities, via Holbrook and on to Colchester, would be available, each company providing a half of the service.

It was submitted that the applicant concern had received requests from the public to run through to Colchester and it was intended to absorb certain of the existing Eastern Counties services between Ipswich and Mistley. It was explained that there was no affiliation of any sort between the two concerns, but merely a working agreement The company stated that it was prepared to coordinate with the other operators on the route. It appeared that the requests for the through service emanated mainly from residents in Colchester, oe the Colchester area.

An objection was lodged by Ipswich Corporation, it being pointed out that the.Old Cattle Market would have to be used by the buses, and that this was already a congested place.

The second application by the Eastern National concern was in respect of a service between Ipswich and Clacton, in support of which it was claimed that there was no facility for passengers to travel to Clacton by motorbus, except by changing at Colchester; there were, of course, motor coach excursions, but these provided a different kind of facility and many requests had been received for a bus service. It was also stated that Clacton Council would welcome the service, although Ipswich Corporation wished it held over.

The chairman announced that the Commissioners declined to grant the application in respect of the Ipswich-Colchester route.

With regard to the second application, they were prepared to agree to a service, providing that there was no more mileage run between Ipswich and Manningtree. The minimum fares would have to be fixed on a mileage basis, which would be such as to preclude the picking up of passengers at fares in competition with the existing fare stages on certain sections of the route.

An objection to the Ipswich-Clacton application, which had been lodged by Messrs. B. Beeston and Sons, was then withdrawn, it being agreed that the firm would co-ordinate with the applicant company as to times.
