I'm very pleased—and surprised —that the RHA has come out so firmly in favour of Britain staying in the Common Market. The national council's decision was getting warm support from some members I met at the international functional group meeting in London last week.

International secretary Bob Duffy seemed pleased, especially as the meeting was welcoming several guests from Belgian transport. Bcib tells me that the Continentals found it hard to believe that hauliers were opposed to rate tariffs and other controls—in Europe it's the own-account people who preach that doctrine, over the haulier's dead 'bodies if you know what I mean.

Belgium's Road Transport Institute director, Joseph van Stappen, :told his British hosts he was optimistic that the present recession would be fairly brief—even though the haulage survivors might be lucky to break even financially this year.
