Cyril Pickering, managing director of Saltburn Motor Services, and his son, Edgar, a director, are to become joint masters of the Cleveland Hounds. But for Cyril this will be no new venture—for seven years he was master of Goathland and in 1961 he became master of the South Durham Hounds.
He started work at 13 on a farm at Acklam becoming a bus conductor and driver sever years later. He drove the first bus with pneumatic tyres out of Middlesbrough for the Cleveland Bus Service, later buying a bus and acquiring his own share in the business, lit bought Saltburn Motor Services in 1928.
