This question faced the Scottish Licensing Authority, last week, when A.A. Motor Services, Ltd., Ayr, was granted a renewal of its licence to run a service between Ayr and Annbank. •

Mr. W. Morris, manager of A.A., said that as the result of a protection agreement between his company and the Western S.M.T., people travelling between Galloway Avenue and, the 'Town Hall had to pay 34-d. on A.A. buses, but only lid. oh Western S.M.T. vehicles. He asked 'that freedom from protection be granted on the AyrAnnbank route and that complete co-ordination with Western S.M.T. from Whitletts to Ayr be authorized. Should the decision he adverse to the applicant, Mr. Morris said, an appeal would be made.

The terms of the agreement stated that within the burgh of Ayr, fares on vehicles running alongside S.M.T. buses replacing trams operated by the corporation as -at December 31, 1931, should be specifically higher than the S.M.T. charges. A.A. contended that this condition should not be enjoyed by the Western S.M.T. concern,

After an adjournment, the Authority said: "What concerns us is the question of equity in extending this protective clause outside, of the old trn boundaries when this contract was entered into."

Mr. J. Kirkland, for the applicant, said that December 31, 1931, was the ckterinining date, and that it could not he imagined that routes not previously operated by the, trams, 'and by buses after that year, were protected by the agreement.
