Driver praises sentencing of knife threat offender

Joanna Bourko A LORRY DRIVER who was threatened at knife-point for his load, has praised the sentencing of the offender, which demonstrates that violent crime against hauliers will not be tolerated.
Speaking exclusively to CM, HGV driver for Garforth, Leeds-based Five Star Haulage, 34-year-old Dan-en Harvey says that during the incident he had a knife held to his face by 20-year-old Jason Raper, who demanded his load at 11.50pm on 15 May.
The incident happened in the yard of Polestar Chromoworks in Aspley, Notts, where Harvey was due to make a pick-up the following morning.
"I told him there was actually nothing in the trailer, and that I was not collecting until the morning. He said that he was going to cut me," Harvey says.
Harvey was able to sound the horn, alerting warehousing staff, who called police. Raper was caught by officers.
Raper appeared at Nottingham Crown Court last week, where he was found guilty of attempted robbery and having an article with a blade. He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in a Young Offenders Institute.
Harvey says: -Justice has been done. This is a lesson that knife and lorry crime will not be taken lightly.
He says his firm has been supportive, and given him a company credit card to use for accommodation if he does not feel safe in his cab.
