Idhe collapse of Communism seems to have left freight forwarder LEP Group in the red. Chairman David James, who is struggling to get the debt-ridden company back on its feet, claims that LEP's troubles are at least partly due to Perestroika.
The company had just delivered a consignment of vodka and cigarettes to a Red Army base in East Germany, when the Berlin Wail came down. The departing Russians omitted to pay customs duty on the goods, leaving the British firm with a hefty £1.4m bill to cover. Jack Wasp, managing director of LEP's freight forwarding operation, describes the incident as "a bit of a swine and a rotten piece of luck".
