• West Sussex County council has been testing a variety of trucks during the past year to decide on a replacement for its ageing Bedford fleet. Demonstrators from Volvo, Mercedes, Leyland and ERF have been worked hard on typical local authority duties.

Latest to come under the scrutiny of WSCC's transport management team is an ERF E618 rigid-end tipper with a fully-insulated Thompson body.

The ERF, which is on option-to-purchase loan, has been enthusiastically received by drivers and engineering staff alike. An order has been placed for six more of the chassis, fitted with three-way tipper bodies. County Transport manager John Ashmore says: "We are delighted that the order has gone to a British firm on merit."
