A Handy Combination Tool.

Autofits, 74, Lansdowne Gardens, Newcastle-onTyne, has recently submitted to us a novel combination tool, which has been placed on the market for the express purpose of facilitating the opening of petrol cans. When filling up in the ordinary way, the seal of the can is broken, and either the lip of another petrol tin or some portion of the chassis requisitioned, or perhaps recourse to the tool kit is made, for the purpose of unscrewing the sometimes obstinate cap. By the use of an Autofits tool, however, opening of petrol cans is greatly facilitated

The device is very light and portable, and made out of flat steel plate about in. thick and 7 ins. long One end is circular and provided with a cross bar to allow it to engage the lugs on the petrol-can filler-cap. The other end of the instrument can be used as a. wire snapper, or as a key for opening lockers. This useful tool is being marketed at the nominal price of la., and if kept within easy access of the driver, much delay will be saved when filling up the fuel tank.

Triplex Safety Glass.

A short time ago some remarkable results were. obtained in testing the resisting properties of BiTriplex glass as manufactured by the Triplex Safety Glass Co., Ltd., 1, Albemarle Street, Piccadilly, London, W. A Service rifle and ammunition were used at a range of 300 yds. cnly, and the following results were. obtained.

The first test was with a piece of Bi-Triplex glass in. thick. The bullet, when fired, struck it almost A32

in the centre, but only penetrated the first thin layer of glass, the intermediate and back sheets were cracked, the back, however, remained perfectly smooth_ in the second test the bullet struck the bottom lefthand corner of the glass' which in this OMB was 14 in. thick, penetrating one layer of glass and one of xylonite, but without travelling further.

Bi-Triplex glass 1 in. thick was used next, and this piece was somewhat badly damaged, but the bullet, as in the previous cases, did not penetrate through. The last test was with a piece of ordinary in. thick Triplex safety glass, such as is used in motor coach work and windscreens, the range in this case was only 50 yds., and similar ammunition was used. Six bullets were fired through this piece of glass, making small clean holes. Although Bi-Triplex glass is built up of layers of glass and sheets of xylonite, the difference in transparency between it and ordinary plate glass of the same thickness is so slight that it is difficult to distinguish between them.. A good point is that although the glass may be badly cracked it still remains airtight and waterproof, on account of the sheets of xylonite, which do not crack, being between the layers of glass.

A Useful Tire Gauge.; It has been proved from time to time by exhaustive scientific and practical tests that the length of life of a tire and the resiliency it affords are unobtain able unless the tire and rim fit each other accurately.

It is interesting to note that Herbert Terry and Sons, Ltd., Redditch, the well-known spring manufacturer, has been appointed official gauge maker to the S.M.M.T. for the production of the official rim gauge which has been standardized by that society.

The maker claims that these gauges will enable the tire to fit the rim accurately, and thereby give the maximum length of life to the tire. The employment of them would enable the vehicle user to ascertain whether there is undue wear on any tire, and if so, whether it is due to incorrect rims.

We learn that there are 24 gauges in a complete set, and each gauge is clearly marked with the tolerances allowed. Full or single sets of these gauges, with interesting particulars concerning them, can be obtained direct from the maker, Herbert Terry and Sons, Ltd,
