Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Speccirig the optional Bridgestone Greatec low-aspect wide single drive axle tyres on the Actros is likely to be of limited use to UK operators. Under current "Authorised Weights" legislation the maximum permissible weight on an axle with single tyres is 10 tonnes subject to tyre equipment. And last week DaimlerChrysler's UK truck team told us they'd only offer wide singles with a 9.5-tonne axle rating. Thus wide single drive tyres would be of limited use on a AHD 4x2 Actros tractor as you'd stand to lose two tonnes from the current permitted maximum drive axle weight of 11.5 tonnes. Moreover, regulations permitting 41/44-tonne antics stipulate twin rear wheels on the drive axle of a three-axle tractor—thereby ruling out wide singles. There are also questions over the availability of 495/45-22$ tyres in the event of a breakdown. Pity really. as quite a few operators would love to gain over 300kg extra payload!
