Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• It should have rained. The weather man had promised, or rather threatened, frequent thundery showers on Sunday. They did come, but not before all the competitors in the Birmingham round of the LDOY competition had left Ford Dunlop -some with silverware and many more with a little envy-to put to rest their wellpolished vehicles.

The fear of an inclement afternoon's entertainment, however, had obviously not struck in the hearts of the Birmingham supporters. An attentive crowd of some 1,500 followed the competition from Aston, where the first tests took place in the morning, to Erdington, where the competitors completed their course, and the more lucky ones received their rewards.

The organization at this the twelfth contest to be held at the Birmingham centre was, not surprisingly, good. All disputed results were quickly investigated and the corrected results announced. In Class H, the last to be tested, Mr. J. Jennings was at first declared winner, but it was not until the results had been posted that it was realized he had, in fact, forfeited 100 more points than was originally thought. Even this last minute upset could not ruffle the organizers; there was no doubt as to the true result when the prizes were distributed.

At the prize-giving, it was good to see that entrants from smaller concerns fared well. This was especially noticeable in Class G, where first and second places were filled by G. B. Hunt and D. J. Wilkes respectively, both entered by D. Hines (Transport) Ltd. Mr. Hunt must also be congratulated on receiving the RHA Challenge Trophy.

An unexpected announcement was made at the prize-giving ceremony by the chairman of the national organizing committee of the LDOY competition, Ald. R. W. Brain. Talking on the road safety aspect of the competition, he said that he would be quite happy to leave the promotion of road safety to others when he relinquished his post "in a year or two's time". Aid. Brain had been connected with the LDOY competition since its inception.
