• More than 40 small hauliers are unlikely to get debts of up to £9,000 each paid back following the collapse of freight forwarder Astra Transport Services.
The company, of Tilbury, Essex, used only contracted hauliers for its work. It ceased trading in January: four weeks after advertising for more owner drivers and only two months after moving premises.
Creditors include Railfreight Distribution which is owed 19,883; and Keyfuels. Purfleet, Essex-based general haulier Webster Miller is owed £6,000.
Astra moved to a yard owned by Webster Miller in November last year: director Cohn Miller, whose company operates 12 vehicles, says the firm also did some container haulage for Astra.
"We will have to carry on trading through this the three vehicles we occasionally used to do Astra work are on lease," says Miller.
