Mrs Trixie Gardner, a member of GLC's road safety committee, has at last said something that needed to be said for years: "People tend to rely too much on such things as pedestrian crossings when they should remain alert and aware of vehicles and their position." Well said, Madam.
There is a pedestrian crossing outside this office in Stamford Street, It is a busy street carrying a great deal of London's East/West diverted traffic.
Several times a day we are disturbed by brake squeal as some poor lorry or bus driver brings his charge to a hault •
within inches of the crossing. A quick CM survey last week
showed that in every case the cause was a pedestrian exercising his or her — but mainly her — right to cross.
Drivers should be congratulated on their skills and engin eers on the quality of their maintenance. The London safety survey shows that in ped estrian accidents many take place on, or near, a pedestrian crossing. In Poland they call it the target area.
Perhaps they should also take Mrs Gardner's advice to watch out.
