• An Irish haulier who appealed against a IRL750 vehicle excise duty fine was told by the presiding judge that the judge had been driving around without a current tax disc on his own car.
Co Louth-based North East Logistics had imported the truck and applied to have it taxed; but a clerical error meant that when the truck was checked by Irish police it had not been included on the haulier's licence.
The company appealed
against the 111.£750 fine, and the judge reduced it to just 11R£10.
Judge Kevin Haugh then revealed that he himself had sent off the appropriate renewal fee to retax his own car two weeks ahead of time—and had not received a tax disk for three weeks into the next tax period, because of administrative hold-ups.
"Through no fault of mine, I was driving around with no road tax displayed," the judge admitted to the court.
