a Suffolk Police are considering legal action against farmers who tried to stop Continental trucks from leaving Felixstowe Port last Thursday.
HGV movements were delayed for two-and-ahalf hours after 150 protesters, mostly pig farmers from the British Pig Industry Support Group, gathered at the dock gates to prevent meat lorries from driving into the UK. They were protesting against feeding animals meat and bonemeal that is said to contain cancer-causing dioxin.
One man was arrested by docks police for trespassing; Suffolk Police also noted a number of public order and traffic offences, in particular obstruction of the highway, "The behaviour of some of the protesters was totally irresponsible," says Chief Superintendent Paul Taylor. "The action brought severe disruption to the Felixstowe area.''
