Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Greece police stopped Ten Andrews on 11 June at Patras port as he waited to board a ferry back to Italy. His truck was searched and 14 illegal immigrants found on board behind his load of empty pallets.

He protested his innocence and said that the kninigrants must have sneaked on board while he was booking onto the ferry. He was then taken into custody and provided with a local lawyer.

Andrews' wife Sue says "Tim was given a local lawyer but because of the language barrier he didn't know what was going on. The authorities told his lawyer that if he changed his plea to guilty at the trial, he would get a small fine and would probably be deported.

"lie made a quick decision and agreed to the terms but was then sentenced to ten years' imprisonment and a 150,000 [104,(100] fine. I just want him home."

A spokeswoman from the foreign Office says that the consulate has visited Andrews and is monitoring the situation.

Andrews' case mirrors that of Bradford driver David Wilson who was also jailed in Greece for smuggling immigrants, but was later released on police ball ( CM22-29 May).

The Andrews family Is running a 'Free Tim' appeal to secure his release.
