Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN improvement in vehicle starters, but trouble with wiring: this was reported at the first meeting, on Monday, of the Road Haulage Association's 1964-65 highways and vehicles committee. It appeared that although trouble was still being experienced with starters on older vehicles, the D-change model of the C-45 starter on new lorries seemed to be standing up to its job well; some members nevertheless pointed out that it was too early yet to be certain of its operational performance over a long period.

It is understood that the committee would like to see the D-change starter made available for vehicles fitted with earlier types. And concern was expressed on a new topic—the failure of vehicle wiring looms, notably on one pacticular make after only about six or eight months' service.

The committee also discussed brakes— following the Crovvthorne tests—and attention was drawn to an E.C.E. subcommittee's proposals on braking regulations which suggested that some tolerance thould be incorporated to allow for deterioration through fair wear and tear. The R.H.A. committee felt that it similar braking figures for old and new vehicles

were to he laid down in the U.K., then new vehicles which just met the requirements could, after a very short time, fall below the minimum figures; it was felt that any braking regulations should take some account of the need for tolerances on this score.

On roadside checks, the committee suggested some simple markings for vehicles once stopped and cleared, to avoid the same lorry being stopped twice in quick succession, as had happened recently.

Mr. C. W. Oliver of Beck and Pollitzer Road Transport Ltd. was appointed chairman of the committee, replacing Mr. H. C. Redburn of L. T. Redburn Ltd., who becomes a vice-chairman; the other vice-chairman is Mr. A. C. W. Neely of A. Neely Ltd.
