THREE-HUNDRED and fifty lorry drivers earning a basic £33 for a 40 hr week working for Glasgow cleansing department struck on Monday. They want the same pay as their counterparts employed by haulage companies between £37 and £40, according to Mr R. McDonald, TGWU Scottish secretary. "What is worse," said Mr McDonald, "is that occasionally the Corporation, owing to short staffing, etc, have to sub-contract vehicles, and the municipal drivers receive less than the private haulage drivers for doing the same work."

A spokesman for the cleansing department said that its fleet of some 450 vehicles — from large clinker tankers to standard compaction wagons — was virtually at a standstill.

Drivers employed by the highways and roads department are also striking. And education department drivers have given a week's notice of strike action in order to allow time for alternative arrangements to be organized for school transport.
