A CRANE hire operator is seeking to reconvene a public inquiry so that it can argue itsproposed new operating centre should not be rejected on safety grounds.

Southern Cranes and Access from West Sussex has asked South Eastern and Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner Christopher Heaps to reconvene the inquiry after he ruled in a written decision that he proposed refusing its application for a new operating centre on road safety grounds.

The TC had given the company 21 days in which to either make representations or seek a fresh public inquiry because the possible road danger had not been explored in detail at the public inquiry.

The company holds a licence for two vehicles and three trailers based at Pulborough. It had sought a new operating centre at Horsham for three vehicles and three trailers at a site called Southwater which was the operating centre for two other licences.Access was via the A24 trunk road. Horsham District Council objected on environmental grounds and there were representations from local residents.

Director Chris Sadler had told a Horsham public inquiry that the company operated 16 cranes from Southwater and its vehicles based at Pulborough already entered and left the site. MJ McCabe & Son was authorised for 18 vehicles at Southwater; Sweeptech, which operated up to 12 road sweepers, had authority for two vehicles.

Following a site visit the TC said he was satisfied that he should not refuse the application on environmental grounds. However, he had grave doubts about the suitability of the site because of possible dangers at the junction of its access with the A24.
