The Commercial Secretary to the Residency-, Egypt, reports that the Municipalities and Local Commissions Section, Cairo, is asking for tenders, which have to be presented in Egypt at latest by March 3rd, for the supply of eight small motor fire-pumps. Those concerns in a position to offer British products can obtain further particulars from the Department of Overseas Trade, 35, Old Queen Street, London, S.W.1, reference GX.10069 being quoted.

A Book By Ricardo.

Mr_ Harry It. Ricardo, F.R.S., the well-known authority upon engine problems, has recently had published " The High-speed Internal-combustion Engine" at a price of £1 10s. (Blackie and Son, Ltd., 50, Old Bailey, London, E.C.4). This is a revised and extended edition of the second volume of "The Internal-combustion Engine" which appeared in 1923. The present volume contains many additions, one of which is a chapter dealing with the high-speed

oil engine. The book is intended to appeal to the technician ; it contains a great deal of knowledge that has been brought to light by recent experimental work.

A Paper on Oil Engines.

On Thursday, February 19th, at 4 p.m., at the Caxton Hall, Westminster, London, S.W.1, the Diesel Engine Users Association, of 307, Abbey House, Westminster, London, S.W.1, is holding a meeting at which EngineerCommander A. C. Yeates, R.N., • A.M.I.E.E.. M.I.Mar.E., will read his paper entitled "The Development of the Multi-cylinder Horizontal Oil Engine."

Death of a Scottish Road Official.

The death is announced of Mr. W. Curtis Gray, M.Inst.C.E., divisional road engineer in Scotland for the Ministry of Transport. He was the chief representative in Scotland for the Ministry for over 10 years, during which period he was largely responsible for negotiations in connection with important road development in all parts of Scotland.

Petitioning for a Bus Service.

At a meeting of the watch committee of Wakefield Corporation, a letter was received from the clerk to Royston Urban District Council urging the committee to reconsider the decision not to grant the application of Mr. A. Smart, junr., for permission to run a bus ser B22 vice between Barnsley and Wakefield. It was mentioned that the council had received a petition, signed by over 600 Royston inhabitants, pressing for this

service to be sanctioned. The committee, however, decided to adhere to the decision not to approve this service. Roller Shutters for Ford Vans.

The Ford 30-cwt. van is now supplied with rear roller shutters as optional equipment to the steel doors which are normally used. This follows the recent introduction of a similar feature on the Ford light van.
